Funding academic, non-commercial clinical research
The Jon Moulton Charity Trust supports high-quality clinical trials across many therapy areas where clinical need is clear and conventional funding can be difficult to secure. Positive outcomes should be translated to clinical practice as fast as possible. Its principal aim is to fund non-commercial trials to make clinical advances and promote the relief of suffering.
Clinical advances that relieve suffering
The Charity Trust was set up in 2018 to continue the work of the previous charity, the J P Moulton Charitable Foundation. To date, some £53 million has been committed to clinical trials by Jon Moulton CBE and these vehicles.
Clinical research awards
Since their inception, the charities have funded over 170 clinical trials which have been selected based on high quality science with the potential to have a direct benefit to patients. The trials have been conducted in a wide range of therapy areas including respiratory, women's health, oncology, cardiovascular, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, rare diseases, COPD, paediatrics and COVID-19.
The charities have supported ground-breaking research in diseases that struggle to obtain funding from other funders as they do not fulfil their funding criteria.
The quality of the trials funded is demonstrated by high rates of publication – some 16 publications of funded trials have been published in the Lancet.
Funding Calls
We are delighted to announce that the next funding round is now open for applications.
Applications must meet the following criteria:
- Be a clinical trial of a medicinal product, device or clinical procedure.
- Have a reasonable prospect of improving treatment.
- Will provide initial outcomes of the trial within 36 months of grant activation.
- Cannot be readily funded elsewhere.
We are aiming to fund up to ten projects based in the UK. All applications meeting the criteria above are welcome to apply. Applications from UK medical charities for co-funding would also be welcomed.
Applications should be submitted no later than 31st December 2026.
Funding decisions will be made by mid-February 2027.
There is no specific application form to complete.
How to Apply for Funding
Calls for funding are advertised in the Lancet and BMJ periodically. Successful applications will be funded by The Jon Moulton Charity Trust. Applications should initially be no more than 12 pages in length and should outline the following:
- Research title
- Contact details for the lead applicant
- The background and rationale for the trial
- The expertise and experience of the applicants
- A summary protocol including details of any devices, investigational medicinal products and statistical calculations
- A detailed budget and justification of costs
- A firm timescale for the duration of the trial, including realistic set-up, recruitment and analysis periods
- Any ethical or conflicts of interest issues
- Possible and desired outcomes
- Confirmation in writing to the Trustees that all findings from the trial will be made available for publication and efforts will be made for publication
- Confirmation in writing to the Trustees that no intellectual property generated from the trial will be retained for commercial exploitation other than with the prior written consent of the Trustees
